In order to avoid criticism, one must also avoid greatness. So few people question the pre-approved narrative because their primary survival tactic is to simply blend in.

Most would rather appear to be liked by all than risk being hated by some. Being an opinionless follower means you can remain part of the tribe. You can accumulate your good boy points without being questioned. You can stay "safe" in subsistence and let other people take the risks.

As a result, humanity becomes ripe for manipulation. With more choosing to follow than to lead, the concentration of power funnels down to a few.

The deferred responsibility of capable leaders breeds more reliance on authority. A world shaped by leaders and can only survive with leaders. A world comprised of subservient followers is vulnerable to oppression.
