Young people in China spend their formative years under ever-tightening censorship that precludes intelligent discussions of civil, social, economic, and political issues on both domestic and international subjects. Instead, they spend an absurd amount of time on smartphone apps and games.

Combined with a narrow-minded culture, an education system that punishes creativity, and a legacy of in-fighting, China cannot be expected to lead in technology and values in the coming decades.
