What is Spondylolysis and how do I cure it? Spondylolysis is basically a stress fracture of the par region of the low back. The pars are the little wing bony structures you see sticking out from a vertabrae. The condition can be acute or chronic depending on how old it is. Acute means it is a recent injury. Chronic means it is an old injury that did not heal before. The main symptom is a dull low back pain that increases when bending backwards and is lessened when bending forward. I was treated for this for over a month at the Sports Clinic when the bone scan finally came in showing I actually did not have the condition. However, I spent so much time discussion the issue with the doctor and therapists, that I chose to make this video for your benefit. The first thing you need to know is to get a custom fit back brace. You will need to wear it 3-6 months. This is very important. Failure to do so dramatically increases your chance of not healing and the problem becoming chronic. You also want to sleep on your side, avoid twisting, avoid the chiropractor, and avoid bending backwards. This video mostly shows the daily therapy to be done to strengthen the core and to activate the proper muscles in order to support your back. In addition to activating the ab muscles, back muscles, and adducters, you will need work out knots in you hips that restrict proper movement. Finally you need to stretch those hamstrings. Like most stress fractures, these are caused by repetitive stresses put on the bone by running, jumping, etc. It usually affects young athletes.

You can find worksheet printouts of the therapy along with a schedule.
