A sprawling miniseries, that was followed up by War & Remembrance.
Like John Jakes, the concept of historical figures interacting with fictional characters, that have an outsized impact on historical events, while presenting harsh subjects and circumstances, was a key way for Hollywood to introduce a new generation to these historic times. Leave aside the fiction - the presentation of harsh realities - were done pretty well.
