Meaning and the Moral Imperative

A personal narrative is contextualized by what I call a meaning narrative, a larger story which serves as the body of assumptions and beliefs about life that gives direction to the personal narrative. The meaning narrative may or may not be explicit. It is well, as part of a narrative therapy to help people articulate and embrace an explicit meaning narrative. Such a narrative implies a committed set of beliefs about life itself. Such beliefs not only direct but obligate persons to act consistently with the values inscribed within that meaning narrative. In a word, belief obligates action consistent with itself. This argument will be supported with reference to the work of J.F. Lyotard, Ludwig Wittgenstein and the radical orthodox theologian John Millbank.

Educational Objectives:
1) To address the question: Whither the moral imperative in a postmodern world?
2) To address: In search of a truth narrative.
