Perceived Control: Placebo Effects in Individuals Treated for Impulsive Aggressive Behavior

Impulsive aggression is defined as a “hair trigger” response to provocation that results in an agitated state which culminates in an aggressive act during the agitated state. The agitated-aggressive state is perceived by the individual as uncontrollable. Individuals who display impulsive aggression often describe the struggle to control their behavior as Jekyll/Hyde in nature. Recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of anticonvulsant medications in treating these individuals. A consistent and surprising result coming from these studies has been a significant reduction in both the frequency of impulsive aggressive outbursts and a positive change in mood states related to the administration of placebo. A positive placebo effect in this population suggests that while they perceive to have no control over their aggressive behavior, they do indeed have some control. These results are not only of significant use in the development of potential treatments for aggressive individuals (e.g., cognitive behavior therapy) but add to the discussion of responsibility in the context of mental illness and criminal behavior. Data from aggressive individuals will be presented showing the relationships between perceived control of aggressive behavior, hostile attribution bias, mood states and placebo effects
