During Nicaragua's 1980 National Literacy Crusade around 115000 young volunteers from all walks of life taught over half a million people across Nicaragua to read and write in just 5 months. This unprecedented educational crusade reached the country's most remote communities, lasting from March 24th until August 23rd . UNESCO awarded the Crusade the Nadezhda Krupskaya medal for reducing illiteracy from over 55% to around 12%.
