The battlefield north of Gettysburg is generally flat open farm fields. The exception is a knoll which overlooked two of the crucial roads into town. On the afternoon of July 1st, 1863, General Francis Barlow moved his division to this knoll hoping the elevation would give the Union Army the advantage. What followed was fighting so severe one onlooker called it "A Standard Of Hell". Although Barlow would fail to achieve victory, his actions did path the way to one of the most peculiar human interest stories of the American Civil War.
