China accused the United States of double standards at the United Nations Security Council on Friday, accusing Washington of challenging Beijing's sovereignty over Taiwan despite repeatedly defending Ukraine against Russia's invasion.

A day after Chinese leader Xi Jinping warned against playing with fire over Taiwan in a call with U.S. President Joe Biden, China's deputy U.N. Ambassador Geng Shuang reinforced the message during a meeting on Ukraine at the 15-member council.

Beijing is concerned about a possible visit to the Chinese-claimed island by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Such a visit would be a dramatic, though not unprecedented, show of U.S. support for Taiwan.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov commented on the issue while in Uzbekistan on Friday, saying his country's government supports Beijing's "One China" policy on the issue of Taiwan.

"Our position on the existence of only one China remains unchanged," Lavrov told reporters in Tashkent. "We have no problem with upholding the principle of China's sovereignty."
