Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #12: Chinese Checkers

Game #12 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is a marble game that in all actuality has very little to do with either of the things it's named for, Chinese Checkers! This game is played with 2 to 6 players (this version uses 3 players) on a 6-pointed star-shaped grid. Each player has 6 marbles (in this version, other boards can use 10, 15 or even 21 marbles per player) formed in a pyramid shape on one of the points of the star. The goal is to reform your pyramid on the star point opposite the point where you started. The way this game is like checkers is the mechanic of jumping over enemy pieces. However, jumped pieces are not removed from the board, and you can jump over your own pieces as well. The first player to get all of their pieces to the opposite star point wins.

There are four difficulty levels of CPU opponents to face: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which must be unlocked in order. Beat the Impossible CPU to master the game. Also, each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are two pieces of trivia about Chinese Checkers:

1. In fact, this game has almost nothing to do with China or checkers.
2. Chinese checkers was born in England, took its current shape in Germany, and got its name in the United States.

Personal story: Though I didn't have a standard Chinese Checkers board as a kid, my standard checkerboard had instructions printed on the back for a game called "Shifting Pyramids" which basically plays like a much more cramped version of Chinese Checkers. Each player has 10 checkers formed in the shape of a pyramid on either side of the board, and the goal is to reform the pyramid on the other side.
