Performance Notes:

Likely the most popular hymn in history and one of the most popular songs the world over, "Amazing Grace" comes from a poem penned by a slave ship captain, John Newton. As his ship was tossed by a fierce storm, he wrote that if he and those aboard his ship were spared, he would devote his life to God. Later in his life, he did just that, becoming an Anglican clergyman and a staunch abolitionist. Years after his experience on the night of that storm, he wrote poetry detailing his experiences and his conversion to the faith. The song speaks to the promise of redemption to all who cast away sin and become believers.
When playing the piece, the soloist should be cognizant of the pianist's role. At points, the solo instrument is a secondary player accompanying the piano. Additionally, while marcato markings are employed just before the key modulation, those should be more focused on extra weight on each note, as opposed to an extremely pointed beginning of each note.
