Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #3: Yacht Dice

Game #3 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is Yacht Dice, a game dating back to 1938 which is basically like Poker played with dice instead of cards. Each player gets three chances to roll 5 dice and make different combinations with them. After each roll, the player can choose to hold onto some of the dice toward one of the combinations and re-roll the remaining dice to finish that combination (kind of like Video Poker). After the third roll, the player chooses a scoring category to score their roll. This is where the strategy comes into play. For example, to get the 35-point upper-section bonus, you need to roll at least 3 of every number, though if you roll less of a lower number you can make it up by rolling more of a higher number. So you may take 1 in the Ones section if you botch a Large Straight roll (1-2-3-5-6 for example) to keep the Large Straight option open, minimize the damage done by a bad roll, and make up the Ones deficit by rolling 4 Fives later on. You also don't want to use up your Choice space (known as Chance in its later incarnation Yahtzee, total of all dice regardless) too early, because you always want to have a backup option in case you botch a Large Straight or Yacht roll. Once all of the scoring spaces for both players have been filled in, the game ends and the player with the highest score wins.

This game is more famously known as Yahtzee, but Yacht Dice actually predates Yahtzee by about 20 years, with Yahtzee being a later development that added a few key differences. For example:
-Yacht Dice doesn't have a "3 of a Kind" space in the lower section. Yahtzee added it in.
-In Yacht Dice, a Full House is worth the sum of all dice as opposed to a straight 25 points like in Yahtzee. This means that in Yacht Dice, a full house with 5's full of 6's would score more than a full house with 3's full of 2's.
-In Yacht Dice, a Small Straight (sequence of 4) is only worth 15 as opposed to 30 in Yahtzee.
-In Yacht Dice, a Large Straight (sequence of 5) is only worth 30 as opposed to 40 in Yahtzee.
-In Yacht Dice, there are no bonuses for rolling two or more Yachts (5 of a Kind) in the same game like in Yahtzee. I found this out the hard way in my third game.

Unlike Mancala or Dots and Boxes, there is only one difficulty level of CPU to beat to master Yacht Dice. Also, the game keeps track of your high score, and each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are three pieces of trivia about Yacht Dice:

1. The name "Yacht Dice" is said to have been derived from the idea that this game was first played on its inventor's yacht.
2. While rare, the probability of rolling a Yacht (5 of a Kind) on the first try is actually only 1 in 1,296.
3. While it obviously depends on the die in question, some say 5 is the number rolled most often due to the distribution of the holes.
