Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #17: Shogi

Game #17 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is another game derived from the same game that inspired chess, Shogi! This is Japan's most popular variant of chess, but it's much more complicated than simply a Japanese version of chess. The goal is still the same, to checkmate the opposing king (place him under attack with no possible escape), but there are new pieces, a new mechanic, and alterations to certain chess mechanics. First, pawns capture straight ahead instead of diagonally like in chess and cannot opt to move two spaces on their first move, basically confining them to one single file until they reach the other side and get promoted. Second, knights cannot move sideways or backwards like in chess though they can make the same forward movements.Third, because of the placement of the king and rook in shogi as opposed to chess, castling is not possible.

The new pieces in shogi are the gold general (which moves one space at a time either forward, on a forward diagonal, sideways, or straight back), the silver general (which moves one space at a time either straight forward or on any diagonal), and the lance (which is like the rook except it can only move straight forward).

The promotion mechanic is drastically different in shogi than it is in chess. In chess, only a pawn can be promoted to another existing piece once it reaches the opposite side of the board. In shogi, any piece except the king or a gold general can opt for a promotion once it reaches the enemy base (back three ranks) making them more powerful. Promoted pawns, knights, lances, and silver generals will effectively become gold generals with the same moveset, a promoted rook can move one space diagonally in addition to its normal horizontal and vertical movement, and a promoted bishop can move one space horizontally and vertically in addition to its normal diagonal movement.

But the biggest new mechanic in shogi that drastically differentiates it from chess is the mechanic of summoning captured pieces back to the board. After you capture an opposing piece, it becomes an ally that you can set back on the board to fight for your side. Normally, each side only gets one rook and one bishop, but if you can capture the opposing rook or bishop and summon it back to your side, you can quickly turn the tides with both copies of the most powerful pieces in the game!

There are four difficulty levels of CPU opponents to face: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which all must be faced in order. Beat the Impossible CPU to master the game. Also, you can decide which player goes first, and each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are four pieces of trivia about Shogi:

1. Shogi pieces have five sides so you can more easily tell yours apart from your opponent's.
2. The most common mistake in professional matches is attempting the Double Pawn.
3. Did you know that in Japan, Nintendo still sells real shogi boards complete with pieces?
4. If you're about to lose, try tilting the console back and forth and see what happens! (Don't do this with an actual board, though.)

Personal story: I have no personal recollection of Shogi. This is my first time ever playing it.
