Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #19: Hanafuda

With all of the board games mastered, game #19 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is the first card game on the list, and also the card game that gave Nintendo its start in 1889, Hanafuda! This being my first exposure to the game, I'll try to explain it as best I can. This game uses a special deck with images themed after the 12 months of the year. Turn order is decided by drawing a card. Whoever draws the card closer to the start of the year will go first. Each player is dealt 8 cards and 8 cards are placed in the center of the play field. Each turn, the player moving will try to match one card in their hand with one on the field of the same month. Then they'll flip the next card in the deck and try to make another match. If no matches are available, the card goes into the field. Players try to create special combinations with their matched cards, with some worth more points than others. When a player completes a combination, they can either stop the game and take the points for their combo, or they can call "Koi-koi" and continue playing for another combo. If a player calls "Koi-koi", the next player to complete a combo will score double the points they normally would for that combo. After a set number of rounds (this game will let you choose to play either a 3-round, 6-round, or 12-round game), the player with the highest score wins.

There are four difficulty levels of CPU opponents to face: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which all must be faced in order. Beat the Impossible CPU to master the game. Also, the game keeps track of your highest score, you can unlock a special Mario-themed deck after playing the game for the first time, and each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There is only one piece of trivia about Hanafuda, and I think every Nintendo fan already knows it:

1. Nintendo has been manufacturing and selling hanafuda cards in Japan for over 130 years.

Personal story: I have no personal recollection of Hanafuda. This is my first time ever playing it.
