Game #20 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is one of the more complicated games in the roster, Riichi Mahjong! This variation of mahjong was invented in Japan in 1924, and it's basically Gin Rummy but with mahjong tiles instead of playing cards. Each player has 14 tiles in their hand, and each player takes turns drawing a tile and discarding one they don't need on their way to their goal to create a valid hand by creating triplets and suited runs of three. There are several calls you can make to help you in this process. If another player discards a tile that completes a triplet for you, you can call "Pon!", take that tile, lay down your triplet, and then discard one of your tiles. Likewise, if another player discards a tile that completes a run for you, you can call "Chi!", take that tile, lay down your run, and then discard one of your tiles. Same thing with calling out "Kan!" for a tile that completes a quad. When a player is only one tile away from completing their hand, they are in tenpai, and if a player reaches tenpai without laying down any open melds, they can call "Riichi!" and cannot change their hand until they draw or someone else discards the tile needed to complete the hand. If someone discards the needed tile, that player calls out "Ron!" and they win the hand. If the player draws the needed tile, they call out "Tsumo!" and they win the hand. If all the tiles are drawn and nobody makes a hand, then any player in tenpai will win points from any players not in tenpai.

Scoring is where this game truly gets complicated. Rather than trying to explain it myself, just check for more information here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Mahjong_scoring_rules#Steps_of_calculation

There are four difficulty levels of CPU opponents to face: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which all must be faced in order. Beat the Impossible CPU to master the game. Also, the game keeps track of your highest score, and each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are four pieces of trivia about Riichi Mahjong:

1. If the complexity of Riichi Mahjong seems daunting, try learning gin rummy first, which also involves creating runs and triplets.
2. Riichi Mahjong is a Japanese variant of a game which originated in ancient China.
3. The chances of getting a Quadruple Kan hand are somewhere around 0.000234%!
4. Much of the terminology here is adapted from the Japanese terms. If you find that you enjoy the game, consider learning the Japanese terms!

Personal story: I had never played this game before, but per the first piece of in-game trivia, I have played gin rummy with my card-shark family many times.
