Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #24: President

Game #24 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is another game that I had never played before until this collection: President! This is another complicated game to explain (though not nearly as complicated as Riichi Mahjong!), but I'll do my best. This is a trick-taking game, where each player gets 13 cards with the goal of getting rid of all of them first. In this game, the card hierarchy is different than most other games. In most games, 2 is the lowest, Ace is the highest, while in other games Ace is the lowest and King is the highest. But in this game, 3 is the lowest and 2 is the highest (or Joker is the highest if you have the Joker enabled). The first player to play can lead off in several different ways: either by the standard playing of a single card, or laying down two, three, or even all four of the same number at once, or they could also play a suited run of three at once (ex: 3-4-5 of spades). Each player going clockwise must play in the same manner and must go higher than the player before (for example, if the first player starts by laying down a pair of 3's, the next player must lay down a higher pair of 4's or better). If a player can't play, they pass their turn until nobody can play. You can also choose to pass even if you can play, which might be beneficial in some situations like to avoid breaking up a pair just in case a player decides to lead off with a pair. Then the last player to actually play a card gets to start the next trick and play resumes in this manner until three players are out of cards.

At the end of each round, the player who finished 1st is the President in the next round, and the player who finished 2nd is the Vice President. At the beginning of round 2 onward, the President from the last round gets to pass any two cards to the player in 4th place, while 4th place must pass their two strongest cards to the President. Also, the Vice President and the 3rd-place player do the same but only passing one card. Whoever wins the Presidency at the end of the last round (either round 5 or round 10) wins the game.

There are also several house rules you can adjust in this game, Including:
-8 Clear: When enabled, if you play an 8 (or a pair of 8's, three 8's, or a run with an 8 in it i.e. 6-7-8), the cards are cleared and you instantly start the next turn.
-3 of Spades Reversal: Normally the Joker tops everything else in a single-card round of play (just don't play it as your last card or you'll automatically finish 4th place!), but when this rule is enabled, the 3 of Spades can beat it and will clear the cards instantly starting the next round with the player who played the 3 of Spades
-Suit Restrictions: When enabled, if more than one card of the same suit is played in a row, the next player can only play a card of that suit. For example, if someone plays a 7 of Hearts and the next player follows up with a 10 of Hearts, the following players can only play hearts.
-Downfall: When enabled, if the President doesn't get 1st place again in the next round, they'll automatically finish 4th.

There are four levels of difficulty for the CPU players: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which must be unlocked in order. Beat the Impossible CPU to master the game. Also, each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are two pieces of trivia about President:

1. This is a very popular party game in Japan, known as Daifugou by many people across the nation.
2. The game goes by many different names. You may have played it before without knowing it!

Personal story: Despite the second piece of trivia, I still have never played this game before.
