With the card games finished, Game #31 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is a game that can be played both solo and in online competitive play, and the first sport on our list, Golf! Invented in 15th-century Scotland, the objective of Golf is to hit a small ball into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. Each hole has a tee-off spot, a putting green where the hole is, as well as other forms of terrain and obstacles like the fairway, the rough (tall grass), bunkers (sand traps), trees, rocks, and the dreaded water hazards, and each hole is also unique in its layout and hazard arrangement. When playing solo, you're just trying to get your score as low as possible, but when playing online, the player with the fewer strokes to the end of the course wins.

There are actually two ways to play golf: lowest number of overall strokes by an individual (stroke play), or lowest score on the most individual holes in a complete round by an individual or team (match play). Stroke Play is the most common format at all levels, and is used in both single-player and online multiplayer in this collection.

This is a single-player game, so there are no CPU opponents to beat to master the game. You just have to play one 3-hole game and one 9-hole game. Also, the game keeps track of your high (or in this case low) scores in each mode, and each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are four pieces of trivia about Golf:

1. Some say that the first games of golf were played using molehills as the holes.
2. The names of the better scores you can get are all named after birds. (Birdie = 1 under par, Eagle = 2 under, Albatross = 3 under)
3. If you hear someone yelling "Fore!" on a golf course, it's a warning to watch out for flying balls. Be careful! (I remember one throat lozenge commercial where a golfer was trying to yell "Fore!" but his sore throat wouldn't let him get it out so he kept hitting people)
4.The reason for the little dimples on golf balls is that it apparently makes them fly farther.

Personal story: I've played a few virtual golf games on PC and NES, but the only real-life game of golf I've ever played was with my aunt at my grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary.
