Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #34: Darts
Game #34 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is a pub sport and the second of three games in the collection that require the use of gimmicky controls, Darts! In this game, players throw small missiles known as darts at a circular target known as a dartboard. Hitting different areas will score you different amounts of points as indicated by the numbers on the outside edge of the board. However, if you hit the outside red and green circle you'll get double the points, and if you hit the inside red and green circle you'll get triple (hitting the Triple 20 is the best throw in the game)! Hitting the center circle is known as a bullseye (25 points), and hitting the small red dot in the dead center is a Double Bullseye (50 points).
There are many different ways to play darts. This game covers three of them. In 301, you start with 301 points and your goal is to get down to 0 without going negative (so you need 301 points exactly in order to win). If a dart throw puts your score in the negative, you go bust, which means your score resets to what it was before your turn and your turn is forfeit. The first player to reach zero wins. Another game mode, 501, plays exactly the same except your score starts at 501. In the last mode, Count Up, you start at zero and the goal is simply to get the highest score after 8 turns.
There are four levels of CPU opponents to face in this game: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which all must be beaten in order. Though you don't have to beat the Impossible CPU to master the game, I wanted to for completion's sake. To master Darts, all you have to do is win in each game mode. Also, the game keeps track of your high score in Count Up mode, and each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are four pieces of trivia about Darts:
1. The game of darts originated in England during the 1300s.
2. Some of the first games of darts were played using barrels as targets.
3. There is a darts set worth more than $20,000. (You'd have to be a very dedicated darts player to shell out for this, like you'd have to be a very dedicated NES collector to shell out that much for an authentic Nintendo World Championships cartridge.)
4. As you may expect, devoted darts players prefer to use their very own darts.
Personal story: My dad used to have an electronic dartboard at his old house. It had four games built in: 301-901 (you can set the starting score at 301, 401, 501, 601, 701, 801, or 901), Count Up (this version ended the game once a player reached a set target score), Shootout (where the dartboard picks a number at random and the first to hit that number scores a point), and Cricket (where you fight for control of 15-20 and the bullseye).
