Game #40 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is the fifth and final toy sport in the collection, Toy Baseball! While Toy Boxing may have been one of the quickest games in the collection, Toy Baseball is definitely the longest of the sports games and one of the longer games to play. In baseball, players smack a hard white ball with a bat in an attempt to knock it out of the park. The opposing team's pitcher can trip the batter up by throwing curveballs, fastballs, slow balls, sliders, etc. making them swing and miss for a strike. If the batter swings and misses, doesn't swing as the pitch hits the strike zone, or hits the ball outside of the first or third base lines, it's a Strike. Three strikes and the batter is out. If a pitch falls outside of the strike zone and the batter doesn't swing, it's counted as a Ball. Four balls, and the batter walks to first base automatically. If the batter lands a successful hit on the ball, he will immediately start running around the bases going counterclockwise. If the hit gets caught in midair by an opponent in the field, the batter is out. If the opponent's first baseman gets the ball before the batter can run to it in time, the batter is out. If the batter safely makes it to first base, he can either stay, or continue on to second base if he feels the outfield situation allows for it. Then the cycle repeats with the next batter. If a runner is able to completely round the bases either over a series of base hits by the team or by a single home run swing that hits the ball over the fence, each runner that makes it to home plate scores one point. Once three players on the batting team are out, the teams change positions so now the pitching/fielding team goes up to bat and vice versa. Then the process repeats and once three outs are achieved, that ends the inning. Professional baseball games go for 9 innings, but in this game you can shorten it to 3 or 6 if you want. At the end of the last inning, the team with the most runs batted in (RBIs) wins.

There are four levels of CPU opponents to face in this game: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which all must be beaten in order. Beat the Impossible CPU to master the game. Also, the game records your high score, and each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are four pieces of trivia about Toy Baseball:

1. In the United States, baseball is so popular that it's considered the "national pastime."
2. There's a superstition that says it's easier to hit home runs after the seventh inning. (probably after the stretch)
3. Early versions of the home plate were made from iron or marble.
4. Originally, the winning team was the first to get to 21 runs. (the highest score I've seen in a professional MLB game is only 11, so I imagine games would take an eternity with this rule, which is why they changed it to the highest score after 9 innings.)

Personal story: Though I never actually played baseball except in PE class in school, my dad used to take me and my brother to Oakland A's games all the time as a kid.
