Game #50 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is the second solitaire game in the collection and the first one played with standard playing cards, Klondike Solitaire! In this game, a tableau of seven fanned piles of cards are laid out from left to right, with each pile having one more card than the last (the first pile on the left has one card, the next one has two, and so on with the last one on the right having seven) and only the last card in each pile being turned face up. In order to get to the downturned cards, you can build upon the piles by descending numbers and alternating colors (for example, moving a red 8 on top of a black 9, or a black Jack on a red Queen, etc., with Ace being low and King being high). Kings, being the high card, can only be moved onto an empty pile. If you have a partial pile of cards, you can move the whole thing at once to a pile that works (for example, if you have a pile consisting of a red 5, a black 4, and a red 3, you can move the whole thing on top of a black 6). If you can't make a move, you must turn over a card from the remainder of the deck. If that card can go on one of the piles, you can move it there and continue the same way. The ultimate goal is to get the whole deck into the four foundations (one for each suit) in the upper right part of the playing field, starting from Ace and going all the way up to King.

There are two different ways to play with regard to drawing cards from the deck: one at a time or three at a time. Win in both ways to master the game. Also, the game keeps track of your fastest time in both Draw 1 and Draw 3 modes, and each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are three pieces of trivia about Klondike Solitaire:

1. Klondike Solitaire is one of the more popular forms of card-based solitaire, to the point where "solitaire" used on its own usually refers to this variant.
2. "Solitaire" is the French word for "lonely." Appropriate for a game played solo. Oddly enough, in France it's known as "Grande Patience" instead.
3. Named after the Klondike River, the famous site of a 19th century gold rush on the U.S. and Canadian border, it's said this game was a favorite among prospectors.

Personal story: This was my mom's favorite way to pass time when I was a kid.
