Jalen Brunson is signing with the New York Knicks. And while this will not be official until July first, the big dogs when it comes to reporting, already hinted at it, so let me tell you why it is a done deal, and what it means for both teams.
My Knicks got themselves a point guard.
What up everybody, my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
First, Mark Stein from ESPN wrote that quote: there is a growing resignation in Dallas that the Knicks are indeed Brunson's top choice and his inevitable destination.
In the meantime, the Knicks traded away Alec Burks and Nerlens Noel to the Pistons in order to open up cap space to be able to sign Brunson.
And there’s no way you trade away 2 pieces of the roster without any guarantee from the player himself that he's coming.
And you know that this guarantee is legit when you got 2 sons Jalen Brunson and his agent Sam Rose on 1 side, and 2 dads Leon Rose the Knicks GM and Rick Brunson the Knicks assistant coach on the other side.
So you know this is as first hand of an info as it can possibly get. If they traded away 2 players to make the deal, it means the deal is happening.
Tim Cato who is the Dallas beat writer also mentioned that the Mavs are seeing this as a certainty, and the focus has now shifted to finding a replacement for him, instead of trying to keep him.
The most widely mentioned name is Goran Dragic, Luka’s compatriot. The duo plays well together, they won the European championship and finished 4th in the Olympics. So there’s a nice synergy there.
During a national team press conference they were asked about this possibility but Doncic didn’t want to donate 100 thousand dollars to the NBA by talking about it before free agency opens, which is absolutely a smart decision.
It seems that the Mavs had a line in the sand to where they would go for Brunson, and that is below what the Knicks are reportedly going to offer for 4 years, which is close to 110 million according to Chris Haynes, another well informed guy in the industry.
With the great year that Brunson had, to me his ceiling is not much higher than this. But if he can have even just a slight bump as the main ball handler, and be able to sustain it I think that this is not bad.
The point guard position for the Knicks last season was horrific. Kemba Walker’s offensive production was nowhere close to making up for how he was hunted on defense, basically rendering him unplayable, and Thibodeau shut him down for the season.
And with Derrick Rose missing games due to injuries, Alec Burks and Emanuel Quickley played the point guard role when that’s absolutely not their position.
So you can imagine how good the offense can be with a band aid solution like that.
I’ve said it many times, the point guard is the most important position for a team in my opinion, so any time you have a chance to go and get a good one, you go and do it.
Especially if it is a tremendous upgrade over what you now have.
And I’m sure that they will try to upgrade the roster even more this offseason.
BTW If you want a detailed breakdown of exactly how good Jalen Brunson was last season, I made a video about that just last week. The link is in the description.
So can the Knicks be competitive this year? Let me know in the comments. That’s it for now, subscribe and talk to you in the next one. Peace out.
