Sunday Longplay - Deadpool: Hardcore Edition (Ninja Gaiden NES ROM Hack)

This week on Sunday Longplay, I'm playing a different version of a popular ROM hack. Many in the ROM hacking community know of a Deadpool NES game that was made by hacking Ninja Gaiden, but another member of the community took Deadpool another step further in difficulty and variety. I still have yet to see a full playthrough of this version of the game (only the original Deadpool hack), so I decided to take it upon myself. Welcome to Deadpool: Hardcore Edition!

In the original Deadpool hack, you have two difficulty settings: Mercy Mode and Merc Mode. In the Hardcore Edition, there is no mercy! The hard mode from the original version is now the normal setting, and the new hard mode is called Hell Mode! And it is exactly that - pure hell! But you know me, I love a good challenge!

Speaking of challenges, the creator of this hack made another Ninja Gaiden hack called "Ninja Gaiden In Hell", which is basically every aspect of unfair stage design rolled into one, basically like Kaizo Ninja Gaiden (for those unfamiliar with the term "Kaizo", it comes from a very popular and absurdly difficult ROM hack of Super Mario World called Kaizo Mario World). That made me a little wary of this hack at first, thinking it would basically be "Deadpool In Hell". But it's not. The stages and boss fights are hard, but they aren't completely unfair, and that I can appreciate.

Another thing that makes the Hardcore Edition different from the original Deadpool hack is there are multiple playable characters. Because of this, the story cutscenes have been taken out to get straight to the action, which kind of takes away from Deadpool's humor that the original hack provided. But again, this version is not just about Deadpool. Over the course of the game you'll play as Deadpool, Deathstroke, Ezio Auditore from Assassin's Creed (who also has his own sprite hack for Ninja Gaiden 1), some chick character who I don't know, and finally as Mr. Ninja Gaiden himself Ryu Hayabusa. Each character has their own theme song that plays during their stages as well.

There is a different ending to this version compared to the original hack as well. And after the ending, you go to a bonus hub level where you can listen to the game's music and fight a boss rush that ends with a brand-new boss exclusive to that mode! I'm going for it all, Hell Mode plus Boss Rush!
