Doom 2: Back To Saturn X Episode 1 (Switch Add-On) - Map 25: ??? (Ending Cutscene)

The 25th and final level of Back To Saturn X Episode 1 is known as "The Unsinkable Fats Domino" in the PC release, but renamed to "???" in the console release. This is a very unique map in that there is no gameplay to it, and it basically serves as an ending cutscene to the wad. It follows up on the end of Map 24 where after a very difficult trek through Tough Skin River, victory was Within Reach only for it to be snatched away by the sinking of your getaway boat. Now, all you can do is watch helplessly and gasp for air as your air bubbles rise to the surface and you sink to the bottom of the ocean watching the ship and all the cargo onboard sink with you with the area around you getting darker and darker until you finally hit the ocean floor. There you see more cargo crates off in the distance and another one right next to you with a message written on it: "To Be Continued".

Episode 2 of the Back To Saturn X series, entitled "Tower in the Fountain of Sparks", was first made back in 2014, but didn't see its final release until just two weeks ago on August 14, 2020. There is also a third episode, entitled "Instructions To The Rusty Time Machine", in development. I most likely will give Episode 2 a shot after this, because I loved Episode 1. The atmosphere, the challenge, the intricate and gorgeous designs of the maps, the music (both the hard-driven metal tunes like in maps 32 and 19 and the atmospheric pieces found in the three hub levels and the ending)...I loved everything about this wad, and I'm so glad it saw a console add-on release (speaking of which, Episode 2 was just released on consoles a couple weeks ago as well!). I've said this in a few of my ROM hack reviews on romhacking.net, but really it applies to any fan mod or fan game. I believe that a good fanmade game (PC mod, ROM hack, homebrew, etc.) should give a fresh challenge to players who have mastered the source game without going completely overboard with it. And Back To Saturn X does exactly that. The add-on description in the menu on the console version even says it will challenge even veterans. It definitely challenged me, and I love it for it because at no point does it feel unfair (except MAYBE the red key ambush in map 24 might be pushing it...). Anyway, please play this wad, either in a PC Doom source port or through the PS4/Xbox One/Switch console release of Doom 2. You won't regret it! I didn't!
