Super Mario 3D All-Stars - Super Mario 64 - Part 1: So Long, "So Long, Gay Bowser"

In honor of the Super Mario Bros. franchise's 35th anniversary, Nintendo has confirmed a rumor that generated a lot of hype and released a new All-Stars collection with three 3D Mario games combined into one package! Super Mario 3D All-Stars is finally here, available only for a limited time until March 31, 2021 for whatever reason, and with it comes three classic 3D Mario titles: Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy (but not Galaxy 2 for whatever reason)! Also with the collection comes upscaled visuals for all three games, as well as a built-in music player to just kick back and listen to the music of all three games.Show more

This collection is perfect for me to finally settle some unfinished business from my childhood, because I had never fully 100% completed Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Galaxy, and I had never even played Super Mario Sunshine since I never owned a Gamecube. So let's begin my road to redemption with the first game in the 3D All-Stars collection, Super Mario 64!

Initially released on September 29, 1996 in North America as a launch title for the Nintendo 64 console, Super Mario 64 was Mario's first leap into the third dimension which, though it didn't invent the 3D platforming genre, did codify the genre. It also added new moves for Mario that would become staples in later games like the triple jump, the ground pound, the long jump, the dive, and the backflip, and it was also the first mainline entry to solidify the Princess's name as Peach (first introduced in the spin-off Yoshi's Safari) and Charles Martinet as the voice of Mario (first introduced in a PC game called Mario's Game Gallery).

The gist of the story is Princess Peach has invited Mario to the Mushroom Kingdom castle for cake. Mario goes there only to find that Bowser has kidnapped the princess once again and stolen all of the Power Stars that protect the castle, and Mario must go inside the various paintings inside the castle to retrieve the power stars from the worlds within to save the castle and save Peach. Each painting world has 7 stars (six for completing different objectives in the world, and the last one for collecting 100 coins in the world), and there are also 15 secret stars hidden in the castle for a grand total of 120.

In Part 1 of my Super Mario 64 playthrough, I clean off 20 years of rust, collect all but two stars in the first world, collect three of the castle's secret stars, fight Bowser for the first time, and mourn the death of one of the greatest retro gaming memes that the original release of the game created.
