FREE CHICKENS?!

We have a simple rule here at the GWP Homestead: if someone offers you free chickens, you take them!

After a few chickens were abandoned at the house next door to one of the ladies from our church they started causing problems for her – mainly making a mess on her back porch! There were originally six but chickens live their lives at the bottom of the food chain and when it came time for us to step in there were only a hen and a rooster remaining. Even though these birds had been abandoned months prior they still roosted in their coop, so after dark we went in and scooped up the two of them and brought them home with us. Megan is a proficient chicken wrangler! They appear to be in good shape despite having been “wild” and a little good food should make them fat and happy again. The hen was also still laying eggs which is a good indicator that she has been eating well and getting the proper nutrition.

Since we got home late the night we picked up the chickens we left them together in a pet crate and the next day we separated them. We have integrated Vicki the hen (named after the lady from our church) with our flock. She is doing great and is already one of our better laying hens! We believe she is an Easter Egger, also known as an Americana; her robin’s blue eggs are a dead giveaway. We have also found a new home for the rooster where he can tend to his own hens and not compete against the roosters we already have on our farm.

Also featured in this video are Bonnie and Clyde the goats, our steer, and some of our other chickens like Larry Lavender and Priscilla the silver-laced Cochin.
