Defending the Ankle Lock in Ashi Garami
The most common defense for the ankle lock in ashi garami has been clearing the foot on the hip. I've had more success, though, with focusing on sitting up first.
Why?
It's because the battle for the ankle in the position is fundamentally focused on distance management, and sitting up gives you the advantage of gravity when waging that war.
