Sunday Longplay - Epic Battle Fantasy Collection (PC) - Epic Battle Fantasy 1 (Epic Mode)

This week on Sunday Longplay, I'm revisiting one of my favorite flash games from Newgrounds. Now that Flash is dead, creator Kupo Games needed a way to preserve his old work, so two weeks ago on my birthday he released the Epic Battle Fantasy Collection on Steam which includes the first two games in the Epic Battle Fantasy series (3-5 are already on Steam), as well as some of his other early games like the first Bullet Heaven (again, the second game is already on Steam), Brawl Royale, Mecha Dress-Up Game, Adventure Story, etc. So let's dive into the collection with Epic Battle Fantasy 1!

I've already played the third game in the series on my channel, and I really want to get around to playing 4 and 5 sometime, and going back to the first game makes me realize just how far the series has come. The first two games in the series were just a series of RPG-style battles in a row, while the third game was the first that really turned the game in a full-fledged RPG. The first game didn't even give your characters names. The fighter was just "Player 1" and the mage was just "Player 2" (later games gave them the names Matt and Natalie respectively).

The Newgrounds version of the first game flat-out used copyrighted assets and music from various sources (including Pokemon summons and bosses, battle music from Final Fantasy, Zelda, and even Gurren Lagann, and a zombified Goku as the final boss), so the creator had to make a brand-new soundtrack and edit and rename some of the character sprites. The Newgrounds version also had zero checkpoints and saving, which meant if you died against the final boss, it would be right back to the beginning of the game for you. You still can't save in the EBF Colllection version, but you can reload from a checkpoint if you die (which I did twice against the final boss).

Just like the third game that I already played on this channel, there are four difficulties to choose from: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Epic. This version also has a new difficulty called Zero, which is Easier Than Easy. But forget that, I'm going all-out on Epic mode! I'm also going for every single achievement in one run. There are two that involve getting a Game Over and suffering 10,000+ damage in a single blow, both of which I got in failed attempts at the final boss.

NOTE: There was quite a bit of lag in the game during the final boss fight, but that got fixed in a later update after this video was recorded.
