"Soul Deep," written by Wayne Carson Thompsons (an American country musician, songwriter, and record producer), was the Box Tops' seventh and last top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart landing at the no. 18 position in 1969 (Whitburn, 2013). Of interest is the fact that Thompson wrote three of the Box Tops' hits (i.e., The Letter, Neon Rainbow & Soul Deep) (Last.fm, 2022). In 1970, Eddy Arnold released his country version of the song, which rose to no. 22 on Billboard's Country Top Singles' chart (Whitburn, 1994).
