Planting Triple Crown Blackberries // Spring 2022 Orchard Update
Triple Crown blackberries are thornless and bear HUGE fruit. Is that enough to make them the best tame blackberries you can grow? Keeton and I also provide an update on our orchard that we planted last year.

Megan has been keeping an eye out for thornless blackberries to add to our orchard and during a trip to the local Amish greenhouse we came across this Triple Crown variety. Triple Crowns are thornless (a necessity in our house), semi-erect (adding a trellis may not be required), and they bear gigantic fruit (YUM). With that knowledge in hand we plucked up two plants and got them in the ground.
When transplanting trees or bushes its best to dig a hole about 2x the size of the pot the plants are coming from. This helps the roots grow and become established without any extra hindrances. Also, do not plant your plants any deeper than what they are in the pot. Any extra soil piled up around the base of the plant could choke it out and cause it to die.
Blackberries – like a few other plants, including blueberries – like slightly acidic soil. We added pine needle mulch around our plants to bring the pH of our soil down as the needles decompose. We’ve heard peat moss works great for this as well so you can try that if it’s necessary.
Our orchard has done great since last year and we’re all excited to enjoy the fruits (pun intended) of our labor. Our pear tree will require another heavy pruning in the fall/winter but when you’re working to promote the plants to grow in a particular shape that’s just part of the job. Spring is such an exciting time on the farm and we thank you for being here to be a part of it. If you haven’t already please consider subscribing to the channel so you won’t miss the next video.
