God Only Knows (Beach Boys, The, 1966). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-06-02. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"

"God Only Knows," written by Brian Wilson and Tony Asher, was the Beach Boys' 21st top 40 single landing at the no. 39 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1966 (Whitburn, 2013). It was the "B" side of "Wouldn't It Be Nice" (rateyourmusic, 2022). "God Only Knows" comes from the Beach Boys' album "Pet Sounds," which Rolling Stone magazine ranked 2nd behind the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" LP and was the "inspiration for the Beatles' [album]" (Levy, 2005). "God Only Knows" "was the first popular song to include God in the title since 'God Save the Queen' (British national anthem)" (M. Zontine, allmusic, 2021); indeed, the group members were concerned that the title would be interpreted as a religious song and not get much air play (J. Sanburn, entertainment.time, Oct. 21, 2011). Even so, Paul McCartney claimed that "God Only Knows" was "The greatest song ever written" (songfacts, 2022), TIME magazine included the song in their ALL-TIME 100 songs (TIME staff, 2011), and Rolling Stone magazine ranked "God Only Knows" 11th on their "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time" (rollingstone, 2021).

Lyrics:

I may not always love you
But long as there are stars above you
You never need to doubt it
I'll make you so sure about it
God only knows what I'd be without you

If you should ever leave me
Though life would still go on, believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would livin' do me
God only knows what I'd be without you

God only knows what I'd be without you

If you should ever leave me
Though life would still go on, believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would livin' do me
God only knows what I'd be without you

God only knows what I'd be without you
