This week at Prairie Baptist, we have missionaries Randy and Kari Teachout presenting their ministry in South Africa.
The Teachouts joined The Pines Children's Home in Welkom, South Africa full-time July 2018 after spending 9 months at The Pines in 2015. Among many other gifts and talents, both Randy and Kari are teachers, which fills a great need at The Pines. Randy serves as the facilities manager, while Kari serves in multiple ways, including education and health care related tasks.
Welkom, South Africa is a developed town, but it is actually rather young, having been developed after gold was discovered on a local farm in 1947. While Welkom’s official population is 211,011 (as of 2011), the many surrounding townships and informal settlements make it difficult to get an accurate count. The Pines is situated just outside of town on gold mine land, in a former Harmony office building, which Harmony Gold Mine donated the use of in 2005.
While The Pines aims to provide a safe, loving home for children, our main goal is to raise the children with opportunities to understand and accept the love of God. The children attend a local church weekly, participate in a Wednesday night service at The Pines, the teenagers attend youth group, volunteers sometimes lead on site Bible studies, and some older children attend other Bible studies by choice. Some children have chosen to make their faith in Christ public and have chosen to be baptized. Continue to pray for the children for come to know God and to grow in their walks with Him. Above all, The Pines wants God to be exalted in the work that is done.
