Planning Our First Garden and Setting up a Greenhouse

One of the goals we have set for ourselves and our farm is to grow more of our food, and with the polar vortex behind us it is time to get started on this year’s garden! Last year we built a few raised beds but we were a little late in starting and they just didn’t turn out, but with the lessons we learned last year and with all the time we’ve put in to learning and preparing we are confident that we will have success.

To make room for our new garden we are borrowing space from one of our pastures, which means we are in the process of adding more fencing. So far it’s about halfway done; the cold and snow interrupted that endeavor but we are eager to get back at it.

Setting up this greenhouse was easy as everything just clicked together. We added pavers underneath to help hold heat in and also give us a nice dry spot to stand while watering our seedlings. The biggest problem we foresee with this small greenhouse is wind, but we’ve done our best to tie it down securely and even set a cinderblock on one of the bottom shelves to give it some extra weight. It’s been a few days and it hasn’t blown over, so hopefully that takes care of that problem.
