The Ford F-Series 1917 - 2022

When you want the best truck on the market, take a look back through the years to see who was the first, and you will also learn which has been the bestselling line of pickups since the early 1900s. Ford set the bar in 1917 and badged it the F-Series in the 1940s. And it has been the one that all other brands chase in hopes of someday achieving the same dedicated following.

By the 1990s, pickup trucks were finding their way into suburbia and driveways across the country as family vehicles. And that brought about the desire to offer limited editions with more personality than the typical work truck. The Nite Edition was an all-black truck with blacked-out trim that set the tone for great-looking trucks that could still handle all the tough jobs. In 1993, the SVT Lightning came onto the scene to lead the way for a long line of Sport Trucks. The truck was more purpose-built, offered only in a short box single cab. But with a 240 horsepower 5.8 liter V-8, drivers loved this truck as much as its hard-working siblings.

In 2004 the 11th generation of the F-Series trucks rolled out with more creature comforts, including a larger cab. The Super Cab took the pickup truck and created a more family-oriented vehicle that could still haul oversized loads and accommodate more passengers. It was a bit ahead of its time as a more utilitarian vehicle. The 12th generation of the F-150 followed the newly remodeled Super Duty line with a clean and down-to-business look and a twin-turbo 3.5-liter eco-boost engine. The off-road-ready Raptor took truck lovers to a new level with a showroom-ready off-road beast in 2009. Once again, Ford led the pack, and the Raptor is still the cutting edge for off-roading and immense power.

In 2015, Ford went to a mostly aluminum body that got many laughs initially. However, this groundbreaking truck quieted all the comments when it became the first truck ever to receive five stars from the NHTSA for safety. The same year the Raptor 2.0 hit the streets and trails with a 510 hp twin-turbo eco-boost V-6.

In 2021, the F-150 remains the bestselling vehicle in the country. Ford continues to evolve and deliver well above driver expectations with innovative and practical features. For example, the 12-inch touchscreen infotainment center and removable gearshift lever allow drivers to convert to a very functional mobile office in seconds. And because everyone has different needs, the F-150 still offers a choice of five engines.

The Lighting is the next generation of pickup trucks delivering an all-electric like no one else could. The extended range battery will provide 563 hp, can tow up to 10k pounds, and has an estimated range of 300 miles. This is sure to continue the proud Ford truck tradition.
