The plot tells about the development of a complex relationship between college students American Tessa and Englishman Hardin. Tessa learns some details from Hardin's past and questions the continuation of the novel. Hardin has difficulties due to conflict with his father and cravings for alcohol. After a spat between lovers in Tessa's life, a new rival for the girl's heart appeared - Trevor.
