Gorkha Durbar Courtyard |
The Gorkha Palace, located in the Gorkha district of Nepal, is a historic landmark built in the 16th century by Ram Shah. The palace is built on top of a hill at an altitude of about 1,450 meters (4,760 ft). This palace is an hour walk from the downtown Gorkha bazaar.
The palace is the birthplace of the king Prithvi Narayan Shah who was born in 1723 and started the unification of Nepal. Prithvi Narayan Shah was born in the Dhuni Pari, a part of the Palace.
The palace lies on the hilltop and is completely fortified. It is an example of Newari architecture. The walls of the palace are about three feet thick. The floors are supported by extended wooden beams. The crafting of the palace is spectacularly eye-catching as it was done by the finest craftsmen of that time.
Being the birthplace of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the palace has huge importance and significance for all the Nepali People. Gorkha was a minor feudal Kingdom at the time of his birth, after gaining the throne, King Prithvi Narayan Shah worked on extending the territories of Gorkha all the way from North Tibet to South India. Gorkha Durbar is not only famous for being the birthplace of King Prithvi Narayan Shah but also as a place where the annual Dashain festival began. Newari people also regard the area sacred as they view Shah’s as living embodiments of Lord Vishnu. Gorkha is also considered as a place where the famous British Gurkha Battalion was established.

Manamaiju Ajima Jatra
Manamaiju Ajima Jatra
An ancient shrine stands in her name, the Mana Maiju Temple, on a hilltop in Manamaiju VDC (now Tarkeshwor Municipality), which is some distance north of Balaju. Every year, near the end of Chaitra (March. April), or the beginning of Baisakh (April/May), a five-day festival known as Mana Maiju Jatra, is held, during which palanquins carrying figures of the goddess and other gods are paraded around town. It is the most important festival of the area, and is participated in by the entire populace of Tarkeshwor with great enthusiasm.
Now, there is a myth regarding the origin of the name of the village. It goes like this: One day, in the Lichhavi period, King Guna Kamdev went hunting in Nagarjuna forest, and decided to spend the night there. Goddess Mana Maiju Devi (a.k.a. Ajima and Indrayani) appeared in his dream, and commanded him to hold a jatra in her honor on Chaitra Shukla Purnima (full moon day of Chaitra). By doing so, she would fulfill his ambitions. The king surveyed the surrounding area from the Nagarjuna hill, and espied a small temple among thorny brambles and swamps on a hilltop. He cleared a way to it and observed a four-day festival. On the fifth day, he found a jewelry-studded bhoto (upper body garment) left by the goddess as a memento, which he displayed to the onlookers. From that moment onwards, he named the village Manamaiju.
