Community comes out to award Dr. Fareed
The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Brawley awarded the 2021 Branding Iron Award at the Stockmen's Club Friday, Sept. 24, to a rural family medicine physician whose treatment of COVID-19 patients during the pandemic was recognized in the nation and internationally.
Larry Fleming, a local farmer, introduced the 2021 Branding Iron Award recipient, Dr. George Fareed, M.D.
Somewhere midway through the 20-minute introduction, he called out Dr. Fareed who approached Fleming at the podium and then asked his colleague and fellow family physician, Brian Tyson, M.D., to approach the stage.
Fleming just smiled at his friend, Dr. Fareed, telling him not to jump ahead of his introductory speech. The audience was appreciative when both doctors, Fareed and Tyson congratulated each other at the front stage — and with the Branding Iron Award plaque — posed for photographers.

Imperial County's ag report names top 10
The Imperial County Agricultural Commissioner, Carlos Ortiz, recently released the Imperial County Agricultural Crop & Livestock Report that ranked Imperial County in the top 10 of 58 counties in California of the leading agricultural producers in 2019.
The top 10 commodities in 2020 were cattle, alfalfa hay, leaf lettuce, sweet corn, Bermuda grass, Romaine lettuce, carrots, sugar beets, head lettuce, and broccoli.
The Desert Review sought the help of the Imperial County Farm Bureau in reaching local farmers. As a result, farmers were interviewed in four areas of the top 10 agriculture commodities in Imperial County.
Blake Plourd and his father, Jeff Plourd, of El Toro Land & Cattle, talked about the cattle industry at the feed yard in Heber. Pat Dockstader, P&T Enterprises in Calipatria, showcased the hay industry. Larry Cox of Lawrence Cox Ranches in Brawley, talked about the lettuce off-season at press time. Ryan Mamer, of Five Crowns Marketing, provided a tour of the newly planted sweet corn seeds at a field north of Brawley.

Connection Cafe’s third wave coffee elevates Imperial Valley
Connection Cafe is located on 450 South Waterman Avenue and is hidden around the corner connected to the First Christian Church. Connection Cafe is an extension of First Christian Church and first opened five years ago when the church’sformer youth pastor, Osvaldo Ortiz, wanted to combine his passion for coffee with his love for the church.
Jordan Cochran has been at Connection for four years when he first started out as a volunteer and then became the assistant manager.
He said it was the pastor’s idea to start the Connection Cafe ministry when he realized it could be used as an outlet to invite new people to the Church.
“It’s a good way to bring people in and have a conversation. So as our pastor likes to put it — we bring people in here to have conversations over coffee that would never come through the doors of the church,” said Cochran.
Cochran said the staff at Connection are church members and is entirely volunteer based. Their cafe is donations-based and uses the proceeds to enhance the coffee shop. Some of the revenue is used to support other ministries with the church, including sending youth students to summer camp.

Holtville's no-mask vote draws crowds of concerned parents
Imperial County Public Health Officer Dr. Stephen Munday reminded the community in a joint press conference with Pioneers Memorial Hospital and El Centro Regional Medical Center that Imperial County schools do not have the authority to opt-out of the mask mandate.
The Imperial County Health Officer issued a universal indoor masking order, requiring the use of face coverings regardless of vaccine status. The goal of the order is to protect the community and local healthcare system from a major resurgence of COVID-19 cases and to allow businesses and services in Imperial County to remain open, according to the ICPHD statement.
