She has a history of biting people, so this environment is a lot for her. However, we don’t just avoid the hard things— otherwise the dogs would never make progress. We’ve given cora a very strong obedience foundation up to this point, so now we just hold her accountable for everything she already knows. All we’re asking is for her to hold a downstay, and we will do the rest. Meaning we won’t let random people approach her or put pressure on her. She can lie down and relax knowing we have things under control. Is it going to be perfect the first couple of times? Nope. But you’ll see a progression with time. And every session gets better and better. This is the rollercoaster of dog training, and we’ve done it so many times we understand that some stress is just part of the process. Keep in mind, you’re seeing a 30-60 second clip of the dogs day. And not every minute is spent doing fun stuff. Dogs in public are expected to behave a certain way, to us, that means minding their own business and ignoring people and dogs alike. We don’t want dogs in training to think it’s ok to say hello to everyone or sniff and mark all over the place. We hold them to high standards so that when it is time for off leash fun, they respect us enough to listen when that leash is off. We build strong relationships with dogs by becoming leaders to them. Being afraid of making your dog “too robotic” is like saying you don’t want to lift weights because you might turn into a bodybuilder. 🙄 There’s nothing wrong with having high standards for your dog. Their personalities will continue to shine, but they’ll just understand rules and consequences after training.

How to tell if a dog DOES want belly rubs?? Our last video I think shocked a lot of people that this body language can have two completely different meanings. While it can be an appeasement behavior for some dogs, for others it is a friendly gesture. This dog, for instance, is super friendly and ALWAYS asking for pets 😅 Notice how she rolls over well before I even step into her space. She is telling me she is comfortable around me and would like some attention. Her head stays on the ground, she’s not scanning and watching my every move, and her eyes are soft and blinking. You can tell a lot about a dog by their face/eyes, and their tail is typically the last thing we pay attention to. Remember, it’s the head that has the teeth! Not the tail lol So be aware and read the situation before moving in to pet a dog. They are not all the same. It’s SO important to read the dog in front of you.

We can’t even begin to tell you how many people come to us saying: “My dog asks for belly rubs and then attacks us!!” That’s because the belly up isn’t always an invitation for affection. It’s an appeasement behavior. Meaning the dog is trying it’s best to avoid conflict, but if pushed too much, things could go sideways. Cora is with us for six weeks aggression rehab. She is a KNOWN biting dog who is capable of serious harm. For us to put that amount of pressure on her right now would be irresponsible and foolish. Eventually we will start working her more and more above threshold, but that doesn’t always involve going for physical touch right away, if ever. Some dogs simply do not like physical touch, and it’s not fair to push that on them. Trainers and owners need to know what is an acceptable amount of pressure to put on dogs. Now, if she wouldn’t allow things such as collaring up or grooming that would be a different story (those things are necessary in a pet dogs life) however, a dog that doesn’t enjoy a ton of physical pressure put on them? It’s reasonable and sometimes that’s just the dog. We won’t know for sure til we really get to know her and work with her more. But we are barely a week into training. Our rehab program is a process. And it’s not something that can be achieved overnight. Cora is learning day by day that certain behaviors like barking, lunging and growling at us are DEFINITELY not acceptable. But when she gives us subtle cues like this? We respect the dog and continue the training without creating unnecessary conflict.
