How to set your dog up for an off property excursion part 1:

If you’re planning on taking your dog out somewhere, start by controlling the energy from the moment you leave your house.

Address any whining, excitement, pulling on the leash etc INSIDE your house, then down your driveway, and all the way into the car.

Your dog should be lying down calmly in the car/kennel the entire ride.

If not, why?

Your dog should be able to hold a downstay for an extended period of time before they go out in public, which means you should be able to correct them for non-compliance at this point.

If your dog breaks command, simply tell them no and correct them back into a down. Remote collar is great for hands free control, especially in the car.

Once your dog understands that the rules apply to everywhere you go, then you can decide if you want them to be excited at the park, lake, hiking trail, or if you’d rather them remain calm for the store like Home Depot or an outdoor cafe.

Different environments require different energy, but the beginning of the trip always starts the same…with calmness.

Our green to graduate 2 program covers this process extensively. We show how to bring your dog to a cafe, a store, and how to work through a lot of the initial nervousness/uncertainty many dogs display in these settings. It was all filmed live and unedited, with Q+A included!

Stay tuned for part 2 where we take these two to Home Depot!
