Training 4 dogs is really no different than training 1. Once you have a solid baseline of obedience on each dog individually, you then start working them together and doing things with them as a group. However, sometimes this can be a hinderance if one dog in particular is struggling more than the others. 1:1 time with each dog is still important, because it gives you an opportunity to see where the cracks are, if any. In this case, Pumpkin the Dane is a bit spooked by loud noises etc, so she went on her own training excursion. Is it nature or is it nurture? We can't be too sure, but we know one thing, and that's how to resolve it. Vader, the cane corso, came to us TERRIFIED of everything. He'd knock tables over at cafes trying to run away. We did a 4 week board and train with him, and at about 1 week in we started taking him out to bust places. Instead of avoiding his fear, we taught him how to work through it, which goes against pretty much everything your animal behaviorists will tell you to do. We push dogs past their thresholds to show them what they are capable of. If you allow your dog to run away, hide, and never overcome any obstacle in life, then you can be sure that is the behavior you will always have. In a month we took Vader from super sketchy and afraid, to confident and able to go everywhere with us. Vader the cane corso has been with us for a couple of weeks now. Prior to training he would try to BOLT away from new people, tremble, shake, and just be terrified of any new stimuli. He’s getting better and better each day, and he’s at the point where we’re comfortable even having Angelo handle him. This might not seem like a major thing to you if your dog doesn’t struggle with fearfulness, but to Vader, this is HUGE. This is a very pivotal point in training for him. We still have a couple weeks left to go, and we have a feeling some big breakthroughs are on the horizon. You can watch Vader’s ENTIRE rehab process in our newly launched Fearful dog course. Whenever we talk about obedience, people are typically surprised we don’t teach “stay”. That’s because our “stay” is built right into the commands. Down = down until you’re released and I say “break” Place, sit, heel, and recall all follow this same rule. All commands come with an implied “stay” So how do you get the dog out of command? Use a release cue like “break” or “free” Then your dog will have a clear distinction between when they’re in command or not. No more blurred lines. When a dog is on break, they’re technically free to do whatever they want. Run, sniff, play, or in most dogs cases: follow their handler and remain engaged with them. In this video, Courtney is not requiring any of the dogs to stay with her. But trained dogs historically just do. Why? Because when you’ve spent hours and weeks and months training a dog, building a relationship, and basically becoming that dogs entire world…. Why would they ever want to leave your side? That’s the beauty of a trained dog 😎
