Social anxiety, alcoholism, and feeling like an alien
One of the most common traits shared amongst problem drinkers is intense discomfort in social situations. I think it's safe to say that all people feel some level of social anxiety. However, in my experience, I have discovered that people with addictive personalities, heavy drinkers especially, struggled to feel comfortable in any type of social situation. Interacting with other people can feel so uncomfortable that we need to alleviate our stress with the ancient social lubricant called alcohol. Without a few drinks in our systems spending time in any type of social environment can feel annoying, even painful.

Fear's role in problem drinking (Sober Mofos Podcast)
One of the most common factors shared by many people around the world who have a problematic relationship with alcohol is fear. Fear is a brutal beast that must be overcome if we are ever going to reduce or quit drinking. Fear can never be eliminated entirely from the human psyche. It's built into our brains in order to help us survive in the world. However, if we want to overcome a reliance on alcohol, it's imperative that we learn to recognize our fears so that we are able to work with them rather than trying to run from them.

Sober Mofos Podcast
Early recovery is filled with emotional highs and lows. The first year of sobriety can be especially crazy. We swing from high to low in a rollercoaster ride of feelings, some good, some not so good. It's a crazy time. You can feel amazing one day (or hour) and frustrated and depressed the next. But how do we handle it? How do we deal with all the ups and downs in the early days, weeks, and months of sobriety? In this episode, I discuss the synthetic bliss of what is called the "pink ould" stage of recovery and how to avoid any pitfalls, and most importantly how to avoid relapse.

Sobriety, Regret, Resentment, and Forgiveness. Podcast #4
A big part of early sobriety for me was the sorrow I felt because of the poor decisions I had made and the lifestyle I had pursued. It made me sad and angry to think about “what could’ve been" and the potential I had sacrificed in aimless pursuits. It wasn't supposed to turn out this way. My life was supposed to be epic and triumphant, not small and broken. By this stage in my life, I was supposed to have all the cash and prizes. I was supposed to be one of the winners. I was supposed to have a fat bank account. I was supposed to have a big house. I was supposed to have a wife and children. I was supposed to have fame, fortune, and adulation.
The wreckage of my past was not a pretty sight to behold. But it was something I had to face to move forward. I had to look back and fully embrace all the mistakes and bad decisions I had made in my life, and be willing to forgive myself and others who had hurt me. Otherwise, I was doomed to repeat the past and keep swallowing the poison of regret that polluted my mind and soul.

Early Sobriety and The Night Monsters. Podcast #3
What does early sobriety feel like? In this podcast, we'll discuss what early sobriety feels like and how to cope with the emotional rollercoaster of recovery.
Human beings need to express their emotions. It’s as natural as breathing. But as alcoholics, we often choose to suppress unpleasant and painful feelings by drinking them away. Even positive emotions like joy, excitement, and love can often feel prickly and overwhelming. They sting too much. Drinking away positive emotions is as common as drinking away bad ones. Either way, we prefer to remain as numb as possible, lest we feel too much. Why feel anything if we can just open a bottle and feel nothing?
In the early days, weeks, and months of my recovery I was frightened by the constant feelings that bombarded me like I was under siege. It never seemed to end. One moment I'd be calm and laughing; seconds later, I'd be weeping like a baby. It was weird and sort of pathetic.
