Have you ever taken a path less travelled? One of my first jobs was a Visual Effects Supervisor at a small advertising agency. This contrasted with my Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia studies with a major in Graphic Design Illustration (you know, art for kids' books and the like). Here I share about how I mastered and used off-the-shelf Adobe After Effects and Media 100 on slow Apple PowerMacs to win a TV commercial job for Unilever against expensive post-production shops (which had Quantel Henry, Flame and Inferno workstations), at some personal cost. This year the number of Californian insurers has reduced from twelve to five (as of writing). In Australia, the federal regulator ASIC is scrutinising the insurance industry and has found it wanting. And I think staying busy is important and one of the things we can do for ourselves is volunteering in our local communities.
