This is the Final Project I made for my Race and Representation class. Grade: 100 Short Writing: I started jotting down ideas for this final project after December and finalized the concepts of my creative project about a week ago. They say some of the best ideas come from in the middle of the night. (This is also happened with another class.) As a young girl, I have always been inspired by positive black representation and black/indigenous culture. So, I stick to what I’m used to in order to help me grow while still learning the good characteristics from other media that will help improve my talents, skills, and just being a better person. In this project, the components that are being studied are black culture, black representation, plastic representation, intersectionality, and black future with an emphasis on black content creation. From the video project, I have included popular black culture as well as individuals that might not be well known yet or even people that are in the middle of that spectrum. Editing this creative project has greatly emphasized how those selected elements interchange, correlates, and overlap simultaneously and indefinitely. Once I finalized my ideas for this creative project, I was filled with excitement from then and the excitement will continue to remain. Either I have interacted with some of the components in my creative project or I have received a vast amount of value from each content creator that has changed my life. I appreciate all the consultations (most of them free) and the investment they have contributed to my life. Because of their assistance and dedication in seeing me succeed, I am even more thrilled to finally start my media business that I have been holding on for nearly a decade. Final Project of Senior Seminar (Horror/Haunting) Course Grade: 93 Instructor Feedback: Going bold with an experimental approach, Rebecca! I respect you taking a swing with the format. I followed your instructions to a T. That approach definitely yields different experiences. With my eyes closed, your audio selections felt almost like a montage of audio horror tropes (distortion of voices, ominous music, a childish voice singing). Seeing the full version - audio and visual together - enhanced some of the horror and lessened it elsewhere. For instance, the final clip seemed out of place in the audio-only watch, but with the POV visual I understood the context of kidnapping clarified the threat. All of that said, I wish there had been a little more context - maybe even in your comment here or a separate document - of why you chose each audio and visual element. That would also have provided you an opportunity to explicitly incorporate the sources from your works cited; listing them there is one thing, but actually using them within the project is another. Overall, though, this project follows serves as a perfect culmination to the ingenuity you've shown across the semester through your Flips and Mapping a Haunting submission. This project is from my recent midterm in Race and Representation course. Grade: 100 Instructor Feedback: I LOVE your project! thank you for how personal and powerful the content is, how it relates to the course material and the your GSU experience. "I'm not being disrespectful, I'm being disrespected" - a word. I'd love to be able to your project as an example in future classes. Short Writing: For this memory project, I chose to study the concept of representation and my experience of being poorly represented or misrepresented. James Baldwin addressed in the film I Am Not Your Negro (2016) that certain black actors with certain acting roles were not interesting to him. Although, black people are physically being represented in film, it’s the misrepresentation of the black community that plays a vast and important role on our image and how it constantly affects our daily activities and self-awareness. In short, the creative process was a bit challenging because I’m still processing my experiences because it is ongoing while at the same time, I’m thinking about the new experiences I will be creating. Nearly all the content I chose is from my high school because of the foundation and how more relatable my journey was during those times. ‘Sankofa’ is a Ghanaian saying that means “to go back and fetch”. For me, I always have to go back and fetch the oldest history, older history, old history, new history, and current history so I may continue to produce the desired outcomes. I just want to fulfill my purpose and goals of creating a valuable media platform that will appropriately represent the black community.
