Mauna Loa, world's largest active volcano, erupts for the first time in 38 years | DW News
Authorities say flows of lava are not yet threatening local communities, but that it is impossible to predict how long the volcano's first eruption in four decades would last.
Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano, erupted for the first time in nearly four decades the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The volcano's eruption began late Sunday night at the summit on Hawaii's Big Island. The eruption moved from the summit to the northeast rift zone on Monday, where fissures are feeding several lava flows the USGC said. The agency however added that they weren't threatening communities down the mountain. The USGS has warned residents at risk from lava flows to review their eruption preparations. "Based on past events, the early stages of a Mauna Loa eruption can be very dynamic and the location and advance of lava flows can change rapidly," the USGS warned. Mauna Loa, which takes up more than half of the Big Island in Hawaii, last erupted in 1984, sending a flow of lava within 5 miles (8.05 km) of the city of Hilo. It is one of five volcanoes that together make up the Big Island of Hawaii, and has erupted 33 times since 1843, according to USGS. During a 1950 eruption, the mountain's lava traveled 15 miles (24 kilometers) to the ocean in less than three hours.

Spectacular! Fresh drone video shows Hawaii volcano erupting for first time in nearly 40 years
Hawaii's Mauna Loa volcano, the world's largest active volcano, erupted on Wednesday (November 30), spewing gas, ashes and lava 20-25 meters into the sky (65-82 feet), according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
Rising to a height of more than 4 km (13,100 ft) above sea level, Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on earth and is located on the south-central part of the island of Hawaii.
The volcano, dormant since 1984, has been erupting for four straight days.
While the eruption has not triggered any evacuations, officials are closely monitoring as the lava approaches the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, also known as Saddle Road, which would greatly affect commuters.

Hawaii volcano: aerial footage shows Mauna Loa spewing lava
The volcano is erupting for the first time since 1984, ending its longest quiet period in recorded history. Hawaii officials say the 2022 eruption does not pose any threat to property, though unpleasant volcanic gases and fine ash may drift downslope. Mauna Loa rises 13,679ft (4,169 meters) above the Pacific Ocean and dominates the Island of Hawaii, also known as the Big Island.

Volcano (1/5) Movie CLIP - The Eruption (1997) HD
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Disaster visits jaded L.A. in the form of an underground volcano, not the big earthquake all the citizens expect. Shot on the largest set ever constructed in the U.S., in nearby Torrance, California, Volcano is a big-budget, special-effects-laden disaster movie with a standard plot. Tommy Lee Jones plays Mike Roark, a by-the-book emergency management director who is spending the weekend with his daughter, Kelly (Gaby Hoffmann), when the previously-unknown volcano blows. Sassy, brainy scientist Dr. Amy Barnes (Ann Heche) is the first to warn of the threat, which begins by sucking one of her co-workers into a steaming fissure. As the lava starts to spurt in red-hot fireballs, Kelly is injured, and Mike sends her to the hospital in order to attend to his duties, rescue citizens, and run the city's emergency response. Eventually, Roark and Barnes team up to battle the eruption while sparks of romantic attraction fly.

It's Happening Right Now: The Volcano Has Awakened With a Terrible Rumble
The sudden and powerful eruption of the San Miguel volcano, also known as Chaparrastique, is happening these minutes in El Salvador. The volcano threw a column of smoke and ash over 3,500 meters (11,482 feet) above sea level. The eruption occurred during a music festival in the town of San Miguel, located 11 km (6.8 miles) from the volcano. El Salvador's environment ministry officials said volcanic "bombs" had been released within a 5 km (3.1 mi) radius of the crater. In addition, several small villages were covered with a layer of volcanic ash. Local authorities are not yet planning an evacuation, but have warned local residents to be extra vigilant due to the eruption.
San Miguel Volcano is the third highest volcano in El Salvador, with a height of 2,130 m (6,988 ft) and a crater diameter of 800 m (2,624 ft). The last volcanic activity of the volcano was observed in 1976 and in 2013.
