Mama dog keeps babies alive despite life-threatening wound…
When we responded to a report of an injured dog, we found a badly injured mama dog, who despite a deep wound on her head was continuing to care for her newborn babies. She came out of her den right away and was extremely hungry, devouring the treats we gave which broke our hearts to see. With six little babies to care for, Mama was fighting for more than her own survival. We scooped up the whole family and hurried back to the Animal Aid, and for this beautiful mama, getting rest and good food was as important as her daily wound care. She was utterly exhausted after having fought so hard to stay alive and find food for her babies for so many days. She slept deeply for the first 2 days after rescue and we made sure she got extra food and care while her babies happily nursed away.
She healed beautifully within just a few weeks, and we found a caring neighbor who stepped forward and agreed to take care of the family in their courtyard, keeping the family safe and well fed. Our Street Treatment team regularly checks up on the mama and family who are doing great, and once the babies are old enough, we will bring mama in to be spayed.

Painful wound, fracture, and terrible mange. But no prob, this is Superman!
So many simultaneous traumas. A deep, terrible wound on his thigh. The bone was broken in his leg. His raw skin was on fire with raging mange. But up the stairs he hobbled to get close to his rescuers. His eyes seemed to plead: "Take me with you!," and we gently said, "Yes."
As his various treatments got underway, we realized that we had a very special boy on our hands. He practically assisted in his own treatments! We had to think of a name that expressed his astounding resilience and a kindness too big for words.
So we named him Superman. Someone steals his cape though! Get ready to fall in love again.

Healing a puppy whose eyes were sealed shut by advanced mange.
This poor little boy’s face and legs were covered in open sores from advanced mange, a skin parasite. The secondary infection from the mange had sealed shut his eyes. Without sight, he may have had only a few hours left to live when he was spotted by a kind young man who called our rescue team. His whole body was in pain, he was dehydrated and so weak he didn’t even react when we lifted him into our ambulance.
Without being able to open his eyes, he must have been so frightened but he seemed to know that we were here to help, even if he couldn’t see us. We gave him fluids for his dehydration, antibiotics, and painkillers, and within an hour he eagerly ate his first meal. Over the next few weeks he would receive many medicated baths, lots of nutritious food and extra love.
