Heavy Rain and Wind as Typhoon Nanmadol Hits Japan
Powerful Typhoon Nanmadol hits Izumi, Japan, September 18, 2022, bringing strong winds and heavy rain.
_______
READ MORE: Typhoon Nanmadol made landfall in southwestern Japan Sunday night, as authorities urged millions of people to take shelter from the powerful storm's high winds and torrential rain.
The storm officially made landfall around 7 p.m. local time (1000 GMT) as its eyewall arrived near Kagoshima city, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.
Nanmadol had wind gusts of up to 234 kilometers per hour and had already dumped up to 500 mm of rain in less than 24 hours on parts of the southwestern Kyushu region.
At least 20,000 people were spending the night in shelters in Kyushu's Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, where the JMA has issued a rare "special warning" — an alert that is issued only when it forecasts conditions seen once in several decades.
National broadcaster NHK, which collates information from local authorities, said more than 7 million people had been told to move to shelters or take refuge in sturdy buildings to ride out the storm.
The evacuation warnings are not mandatory, and authorities have at times struggled to convince people to move to shelters before extreme weather. (AFP)

Emergency alert sounds in Japan after North Korea launches multiple missiles
An emergency alert for people in parts of central and northern Japan to seek shelter was triggered on Thursday following North Korea's latest multiple missile launches, including a possible failed intercontinental ballistic missile.
"At the moment, there are no reports that they (the missiles) fell inside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)," Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told a news conference.
North Korea's multiple launches on Thursday came a day after the country fired at least 23 missiles, the most in a single day, including one that landed off South Korea's coast for the first time.

Chinese ballistic missiles land in Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone? Tokyo lodges protest with China
China likely fired missiles over Taiwan during military drills on Thursday, Japan said, part of Beijing’s biggest cross-strait exercises in decades after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the self-ruled island. The Ministry of Defense in Tokyo estimated that five ballistic missiles landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone, and four of those likely flew over Taiwan. If confirmed, it would mark a major escalation as it would be the first time China has flown missiles over Taiwan itself. Watch the video for more.
