He was feared by many and when the red devil they thought was put away the community breathed a sigh of relief, that is Until he got right back out of jail! Pomeroy was a precocious child who stood out due to his physical anomaly and difficult temperament. He had a cruel streak that he frequently acted out on other children, leading some of his schoolmates to nickname him "The Boston Red Devil." At the age of eleven, Pomeroy carried out his first known crime when he tried to murder a four-year-old boy he had lured into a secluded area. He was sentenced to a reform school for this crime and, upon his release four years later, set out on a path that would bring terror to the city of Boston. This Red Devil in Boston over the next five years, you see, Jesse Pomeroy began to become a true menace in the city. He would lurk in alleyways and alcoves, often wearing a striking red cape, where he would grab small children, assault them, torture them, and leave them bloody and battered. He was convicted and sent to prison in 1874, but even within the walls of the penitentiary, Pomeroy was still inflicting pain on his fellow inmates. The nightmare of terror didn't end with Pomeroy's imprisonment though. Several of his acolytes continued his work terrorizing Boston's children, leaving them covered in scars thanks to razor blades.
