Exploring Asteroid Psyche: Journey to a Metal World
Psyche is a NASA mission to study a metal-rich asteroid with the same name, located in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. This is NASA's first mission to study an asteroid that has more metal than rock or ice.
The Psyche spacecraft will journey 2.2 billion miles to an asteroid that scientists hypothesize is made of substantial amounts of metal. It may contain leftover material from the core of a planetesimal, a building block of an early planet, and could tell us more about how the solar system formed.
And when it arrives in 2029, the spacecraft will orbit and observe the asteroid for about 26 months using its store of instruments.
Asteroid 16 Psyche is currently in the constellation of Libra. The current Right Ascension is 15h 57m 11s and the Declination is -17° 52' 47
