Jellyfish have tiny stinging cells in their tentacles to stun or paralyze their prey before they eat them. Inside their bell-shaped body is an opening that is its mouth. They eat and discard waste from this opening. As jellyfish squirt water from their mouths they are propelled forward. Tentacles hang down from the smooth baglike body and sting their prey. Jellyfish stings can be painful to humans and sometimes very dangerous. But jellyfish don't purposely attack humans. Most stings occur when people accidentally touch a jellyfish, but if the sting is from a dangerous species, it can be deadly. Jellyfish digest their food very quickly. The Great Barrier Reef is an extremely ancient, enormous host of living things, composed of living coral growing on dead coral dating back perhaps as much as twenty million years. Many generations of dead coral have built themselves into great walls of stone covered in a diverse range of living organisms such as coral, algae, anemones, sponges, fish, worms, starfish, turtles, molluscs, snakes, crustaceans, and an extraordinary array of thousands of species of plants and animals. Although there is no direct physical evidence, first human contact with the reef must’ve occurred for some time. We know that Aboriginal people occupied great parts of the Australian continent for around 40,000 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have fished and hunted its waters and navigated between the islands of the reef region. For large parts of that time, during periods of glacial activity, the area of the Great Barrier Reef was dry with large flat coastal plains. When Narcissus was young, Liriope went to a seer named Tiresias to ask if her son would live a long life. Tiresias responded that Narcissus would live a long life as long as he never knew himself. Liriope was puzzled by this strange response, but time passed, and Narcissus became a young man. Narcissus was extremely good-looking. His beauty attracted all kinds of admirers, but Narcissus was not interested in any of them. One day, after hunting for some time, Narcissus lay beside a still pool of water. When he saw his own reflection, Narcissus fell deeply in love with himself. He tried to reach out and embrace the figure in the water, but he could not. He was so drawn to his image that he could not leave the water's edge. Eventually, Narcissus' love for his reflection caused him to weaken and die. The clear, tinkling song of the Baird’s Sparrow is one of the defining sounds of the northern Great Plains. Once among the most common birds of the tallgrass prairie, this species is a casualty of habitat alteration and the loss of native grassland to agriculture.
