State lawmakers return to the Indiana Statehouse for day two of a special session focusing on the future of abortion access and a proposal that would temporarily eliminate sales tax on utility bills and cap the sales tax on gasoline.

More than 1,000 abortion rights activists gathered at the Indiana statehouse on July 25, to protest the GOP state legislature’s current efforts to pass a bill that would ban the procedure entirely in the state, with only exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the mother.

In an exclusive interview, Attorney General Merrick Garland responded to questions of whether former President Trump’s potential candidacy would impact the Department of Justice’s Jan. 6 investigation. Garland tells NBC News’ Lester Holt, “We pursue justice without fear or favor. Thousands of demonstrators protested the Indiana statehouse as lawmakers met for a special session to debate a proposed bill that would ban abortions except in cases of rape, incest, or to save the mother's life. Nancy Chen reports on how the state has become the latest abortion battleground following the overturning of Roe vs. Wade.

Public testimony from people on both sides of the abortion debate spoke in front of the Senate committee Tuesday morning.

The bill includes $45 million for state agencies to provide pregnancy planning and access to contraception, especially among low-income families.

The Senate Rules Committee considered an amendment to the abortion bill that sets deadlines for abortions in rape and incest cases. They would only be allowed up to 12 weeks post-fertilization if the pregnant person is under age 16 and up to 8 weeks for those age 16 and older. That amendment passed with a 7-5 vote.

They say the abortion ban as introduced is not strong enough.
