Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro called on protesters on Wednesday to put an end to blockades they had set up on roads across the nation in the days since the presidential runoff election. "I'm just as upset, as sad as you. But we have to keep our head in place," he said, calling demonstrations welcome as part of democracy but the blockades on the nation's highways are making ongoing demonstrations illegitimate. He called on his supporters to choose other ways to demonstrate. Authorities said they were making headway in their efforts to clear blockades, but there are still concerns the demonstrations were disrupting fuel distribution, industrial activity and food deliveries. Bolsonaro has not conceded his loss to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, though he said he would follow the constitution, indicating a transition was likely to take place. The German ambassador to Brazil condemned what he called the "shocking" use of "Nazi symbols" at protests in favour of defeated hard-Right president Jair Bolsonaro. In videos that surfaced earlier this week, demonstrators in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina can be seen making what appears to be a Nazi salute, raising their outstretched right arms during the Brazilian national anthem. Supporters of Mr Bolsonaro have held rallies every day since the president lost Sunday's election to leftist figurehead Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. They call for a military coup to annul the election result and keep Mr Bolsonaro—who has yet to publicly concede defeat—in power. "The use of Nazi and fascist symbols by clearly far-Right 'protesters' is profoundly shocking. Advocating Nazism is a crime," tweeted Heiko Thoms, Germany's ambassador to Brazil. "This is not a matter of freedom of expression," he added. "This gesture disrespects the memory of the victims of Nazism and the horrors it caused." Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre responded on Wednesday to allegations that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was warned about China’s alleged foreign interference in Canada’s elections. During a media availability in Vancouver, B.C., Poilievre said it was “very troubling” that Trudeau was told about potential election interference in January and “he hasn’t taken any action.” He said Trudeau must explain what he knew and “why he did nothing.” Global News reported on Monday that Canadian intelligence officials had warned Trudeau that China had targeted Canada with a vast campaign of foreign interference, which includes funding a clandestine network of at least 11 federal candidates running in the 2019 election. Poilievre said Conservatives were seeking to have meetings of the Procedure and House Affairs Committee to investigate the allegations of interference by the Chinese government. Poilievre, who expressed support for convoy protesters in February, also responded to questions about whether his stance on the so-called “Freedom Convoy” has evolved after listening to witnesses and evidence brought before the commission investigating the government’s use of the Emergencies Act.
